There’s a quote that I read somewhere, or at least I swear I did, that went something like “It will be as if it has always been this way”.
It was referring to the idea that when you start out doing something unknown or unpracticed, you’ll be overwhelmingly uncomfortable until you reach a point where you don’t even recall that there was ever a time you were anything but comfortable.
In other words, you’ll reach a point where it will feel like it will have always been this way.
This occurred to me recently when I was conducting a job interview.
Before my current job, mostly just due to dumb luck, I could probably count the number of interviews I’d done on two hands so I never found particularly qualified or comfortable doing them.
Over the past year, I must have sat in on at least 20 and I’ve even lead a few so at this point, it’s hard to remember what it was like before.
In some ways, I’ve always been aware of this which is why I try to write this stuff in the moment but writing it down doesn’t necessarily make it easier moving forward.
I find thinking about that quote is pretty handy though because it’s a reminder that there’s not really any great way but “through” by doing lots of practice and soon enough, you’ll have forgotten all about it.
You won’t even realise that the transition happened until it hits you one day so there’s no point paying much attempting to temporary embarassment since you won’t be able to recall any of it, even if you wanted to.
